Guide to the National Gallery in London

The National Gallery is one of the popular tourist spots in Central London. Located in Trafalgar Square, the art museum is accessible from almost all parts of London, including holiday apartments near Oxford Street London.

A good number of art museums in continental Europe are formed in the same manner – an existing princely or royal art collection is nationalized. The same is not true with the National Gallery. Visit City Booker

In 1824, the British government made an initial purchase of thirty eight paintings from the renowned John Julius Angerstein Collection. Subsequent purchases, as well as donations from the Gallery’s early directors and other private sponsors, allowed the Gallery to expand its first collection.

The National Gallery has a priceless and comprehensive collection of 2,300 paintings that date back to the middle of the 13th century up to the 1900s.
It has a small collection compared to many national galleries in Europe. However, it takes pride in having a collection that is encyclopaedic in its range.
